Liverpool Palmhouse Concert
On February 10th, the Liverpool Guitar Society performed at the Palmhouse in Sefton Park, Liverpool. They kindly invited the Chester Guitar Circle to come and take the stage as well to perform some ensembles.
Although the weather was miserable, (the rain didn't stop all day), an impressive crowd turned to to hear an afternoon of delightful music making. A quartet from Liverpool got us underway with a varied programme of works by Debussy, Praetorius, Peter Warlock and Leo Brower. The rain on the palm house roof (and drips inside) added extra authenticity to their final piece - Brower's 'Cuban landscape with rain'.
This was immediately followed by another quartet, playing music by mainly South American composers. The palm house display of exotic foliage provided the perfect backdrop to a South American programme...a few degrees warmer and you'd feel you were in the Amazon rain forest.
After the interval it was our turn. Chris and Steve started the session with the beautiful William Lawes Suite, followed by a Bach Fugue. The Chester quartet followed with a short programme of pieces, which although appeared unrelated, all had some Liverpool connections. The Phoenix was transcribed by a local guitarist - John Arran, 'Cafe Rouge' was written by our own Liverpudlian, Mark Houghton and 'When I'm 64 is a famous song by Liverpool's favourite sons. Nicole and Ian completed our part of the afternoon with Ian's delightful 'Coming Home', and Brower's haunting arrangement of 'Fool on the Hill',
Liverpool players ended the concert with two famous Barrios waltzes and Barrios's legendary 'La Catedral'.
We offer a big thanks to Liverpool Guitar Society for the opportunity to take part in this enjoyable and rewarding event and look forward to many more collaborations in the future....great music in a great setting!
