About the Chester Guitar Circle
The Chester Guitar Circle consists of a group of mainly classical guitarists who meet every month in Chester.
Our aim is to encourage players of all standards, to improve and enjoy the guitar, and to promote the classical guitar in the wider community. The Chester Guitar Circle has been around since the mid seventies, when it was established by Bernhard Moorhead, John Arran, (one of the country's leading performers and tutors), and Martin Fleeson, renowned luthier. We enjoy playing, talking about, and listening to the guitar. Our meetings take place every first Wednesday of the month from 8:00 pm till 10:30 pm at the RNID, South View Road in Chester. Meetings The emphasis of the meetings is on the playing and performance, and many members and guests also come along simply to listen and chat. Anyone interested in guitar music is welcome to enjoy the evening. We play a wide variety of music. Guitarists will play solo, in ensembles, or sometimes use other instruments and voice to complement the music. And the music is not restricted to the classical guitar. We have had a mandolin player, a steel string guitarist, a 10-string guitarist etc. Chester players are also taking part in the Chester Guitar Orchestra conducted by John Arran, and come together once a month. We are very fortunate in the Chester Guitar Circle to have several excellent players, guitar teachers, as well as composers, and a fine amateur luthier whose instruments are attractive in both workmanship and price. If you’re looking to learn more about any of these, we advise you to check them out. Events We also provide other events and activities, in which members and non-members can take part. Recent events have included a workshop from Samuel Moore, Craig Ogden and the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet; performances from selected players such as the Panormo Duo, Jon Gjylaci and Martin Bickerton; a guitar orchestra day; guitar workshops with John Mills, John Arran and Raymond Burley. Further similar activities are in the pipeline, including collaborations with other music societies. Watch the events page. Members can further benefit from our forum, where there is advice on everything related to the guitar: playing, performances, guitar making, composing and more. The forum hosts an extensive collection of music written by our own composer(s), Mark Houghton and is available to all members. Costs Charges are kept to a minimum. There is a small member's fee of £2 per meeting (£3 for guests) and the annual membership is only £5. I look forward to meeting you at one of our players' evenings.
